Powertainer

Powertainer

150 kW of Electricity from Forestry Waste - My path to product design and project management
This was a truly sink or swim project, despite the tight timeline and massive technical challenge I completed the grant on time and freed up needed cashflow. The first thing I did for this project was fabricate it. Then it kept having unplanned rapid expansion events that would either shut the machine down due to failed pressure relief valves or destroy components from a lack of pressure relief. I was brought back into the project as a designer to solve the pressure relief problem (check out my innovations page for more info). After some designing and testing I installed pressure relief all over the machine and it was now able to get past the initial starting phase. However there were more problems that had not been encountered yet, because the powertainer had not really run yet. I took over the project in response to a nearly unanimous agreement that it could not be done. After wrestling with the backfire prone 19L Cummins engine and a very early stage prototype filter, I raked out all the problems and completed the grant allowing us to continue developing our container sized machines.
